Hey there, coffee family! Strap in, because this week we’re traveling to the rugged, breathtaking peaks of Nariño, Colombia, to visit the Urbano family in the tiny community of La Cueva. This isn’t just coffee; it’s a masterclass in high-altitude stewardship. Grown at 1750 MASL amidst a lush ecosystem of avocado and lemon trees, these Castilla and Colombia varieties benefit from an incredible microclimate that pushes the cherry maturation to its limit. The Urbano brothers—Hernan, Elier, and Napoleon—utilize a precise 15–17 hour fermentation in cement tanks, which really hones in on that sparkling, transparent profile we crave in a classic washed Nariño. Because of the extreme terrain (shoutout to Napoleon for manually hauling sacks to the road!), the beans are remarkably dense, translating to a cup with serious structural integrity and a vibrant, zesty citric acidity that dances across the palate.
